In Mozambique, SVEB is contributing its expertise to Helvetas\u2019 SIM! project, which combines Training, work experience and economic integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u2018SIM! \u2013 Skills for Young People in Mozambique\u2019 project, implemented by Helvetas in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa, aims to improve the career and economic prospects of young women and men who face difficulties in accessing education and the labour market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes this project unique is that basic competencies are integrated with vocational training. Reading, writing and numeracy competencies, as well as digital competencies, are developed directly through real-life situations. Reading instructions, measuring materials, calculating the cost of a service, drawing up a budget, communicating with a client or using a smartphone all become learning opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning through real-world work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/alice.ch\/de\/themen\/grundkompetenzen\/go-upskilling-am-arbeitsplatz\/\">GO<\/a>-R, focuses on action, observation and reflection. Competencies are developed in situations that closely mirror the participants\u2019 professional and economic realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SVEB contributed its expertise to the external evaluation of the first project phase. The analysis was based on the programme\u2019s documentation and tools, interviews, visits to the training centres, and participatory workshops with the teams, the facilitators and the training craftspeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results highlight, in particular, the benefits of Training that is directly tailored to professional requirements. Particularly significant progress was observed in applied mathematical competencies: a 24.3 per cent increase in measurements and calculations, and a 28.1 per cent increase in budget management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making competencies visible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the priorities identified for the future is to better assess what young people are actually capable of at the end of their Training. In particular, SVEB proposes strengthening assessment through workplace observations, practical demonstrations, portfolios and vocational role-plays. Competencies should also be described using clearly observable stages of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the long term, this approach should also help to enhance the value of the certificates: these could not only prove that a person has completed a Training programme, but also demonstrate which competencies they have demonstrated and at what level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consolidating a sustainable model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SVEB\u2019s expertise also extends to the professionalisation of facilitators and craft trainers. Coaching, mentoring, peer-to-peer exchange and the gradual recognition of their competencies are intended to help ensure comparable quality across the various regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key message of the evaluation is clear: consolidate first, then expand. The focus now is on formalising the modules and competence standards, improving the pedagogical tools, strengthening the assessment process and expanding partnerships with businesses, public institutions and stakeholders in vocational education and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second phase of SIM!, scheduled to run from 2027 to 2030, is set to reach around 4,500 young people aged between 15 and 35. Helvetas plans to implement this phase in collaboration with local partners, with one key objective at the forefront: to enhance quality and gradually integrate the model into local skills development structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through SIM!, SVEB is thus contributing its expertise in the areas of basic competencies, work-based learning, competency assessment and the professionalisation of trainers within an international context.
